The “Amalgamation” Choir in Cyprus… When Cultures Meet in Women’s Voices
Cyprus's women's "Amalgamation" choir brings diverse women together to revive traditional songs vocally, without instruments, blending heritage melodies with contemporary harmonies to celebrate cultural diversity and build bridges.
NEWS CENTER– In Cyprus, women from diverse cultural backgrounds come together to re-present music from different cultures with their own voices. Without using any musical instruments, the Amalgamation Choir relies on the power of the human voice alone, combining traditional music with contemporary arrangements, and giving its listeners a unique musical experience.
The choir was founded in 2014 by Cypriot artist and bandleader Vasiliki Anastasiou, and consists entirely of women. It brings together members belonging to different generations and multiple cultural backgrounds, while Vasiliki Anastasiou also undertakes the tasks of artistic management and choir leadership.
Traditional Melodies Come Alive Again in Women's Voices
The Amalgamation Choir draws its works from traditional folk songs, melodies belonging to diverse cultures, alongside original musical compositions. However, the choir's role is not limited to performing these works, but extends to reformulating them artistically, through multi-voiced arrangements, contemporary harmonies, and renewed musical visions that give the songs a different character.
The choir members adopt the singing style known as "a cappella," a vocal performance in which musical instruments are not used, but relies on human voices alone to form a multi-layered musical fabric. In this style, the women sometimes employ their voices as if they were musical instruments, together creating a rich and integrated harmony.
Multiple Cultures Brought Together by One Voice
What distinguishes the Amalgamation Choir is not limited to its musical style, but is also manifested in bringing women together around a shared creative experience. Women from different generations and cultural backgrounds unify their voices, so that each of them becomes part of a collective musical story.
By bringing together disparate voices in one melody, the choir succeeds in connecting songs inherited from the past with today's audience, and at the same time, opens bridges of communication between cultures, confirming music's ability to transcend differences and create a shared space that brings people together.
