Testimonies: Continued Looting of Archaeological Sites in Afrin Since 2018 Raises Concerns Over Cultural Heritage
According to testimonies from Afrin residents, historical sites have faced illegal excavations and artifact looting since 2018, raising growing concerns over the destruction and loss of the region's cultural heritage.
Afrin – Archaeological sites in the Syrian city of Afrin have continued to face growing threats since 2018. Testimonies from local residents and field sources indicate that many historical sites have been subjected to illegal excavations and widespread looting, resulting in the loss of numerous artifacts that represent an important part of the region's cultural and historical heritage.
According to exclusive sources who spoke to our agency, multiple archaeological sites across the districts and villages of Afrin have been subjected to continuous excavation and digging since the area came under the control of Turkey and Turkish-backed armed groups. Heavy machinery and specialized equipment have reportedly been used in the absence of effective oversight, causing extensive damage to the archaeological layers of these historical sites and leading to the irreversible loss of valuable archaeological information.
The same sources stated that a number of artifacts unearthed during these excavations were removed from their original locations and transferred to various destinations. They also alleged that some archaeological objects have been stored inside private homes in villages and towns across the region, including a house in the village of Sheikh Khorza in Bulbul district that was reportedly occupied by a commander of a Turkish-backed armed faction. According to the sources, delegations from the Syrian Interim Government are currently sent to the location on a daily basis for the purpose of trading these artifacts.
The sources further emphasized that the excavations have not ceased and continue at several locations believed to contain remains dating back to ancient civilizations, raising concerns over the ongoing destruction of Afrin's cultural heritage and the continued loss of its historical legacy.
It has not been possible to independently verify all of the information emerging from the area due to the ongoing complex security situation. However, repeated reports and testimonies continue to highlight concerns regarding the fate of archaeological sites and the cultural heritage of Afrin.
