KJAR Condemns Reinstatement of Varisha Moradi’s Death Sentence and Demands International Intervention

KJAR condemned Tehran Revolutionary Court’s reinstated death sentence against activist Varisha Moradi on “rebellion” charges, demanding immediate international to annul it and secure her release.

NEWS CENTER_In a judicial step that came after the annulment of her previous sentence, the Revolutionary Court in Tehran issued a second death sentence against the Kurdish political and human rights activist, Varisha Moradi, detained in Evin Prison for Women.

The Free Women's System in Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR) issued a statement today, Thursday, 15 October, condemning the re-issuance of the death sentence against political activist Varisha Moradi, holding the judicial and security institutions of the Islamic Republic directly responsible for her life and health.

The statement explained that Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, headed by Abolqasem Salavati, issued a new death sentence against Varisha Moradi on the charge of "belonging to a rebellious group." This ruling came despite the fact that the Iranian Supreme Court had previously annulled the death sentence and returned the case to the court for retrial. According to reports published about the case, the court did not conduct the investigations requested by the Supreme Court in the retrial.

In its statement, the System described the re-issuance of the death sentence as an attempt to take revenge on the struggle of freedom-loving women and the "Jin Jiyan Azadî" movement, noting that Varisha Moradi was subjected to physical and psychological torture, and was deprived of medical treatment and family visits during her detention period, which exceeded three years.

The statement held the judicial authority and security agencies in the Islamic Republic fully and directly responsible for the violence to which Varisha Moradi is subjected, and for her physical and psychological safety, demanding that international human rights organizations, women's unions, and liberation movements intervene immediately to annul the death sentences, and release Varisha Moradi and all political prisoners facing the same punishment unconditionally.

The Kurdish activist Varisha Moradi, detained since August 2023, faces a death sentence that the Revolutionary Court re-issued against her following a controversial judicial review. The initial ruling issued in November 2024 had been annulled by the Supreme Court due to fundamental deficiencies in the investigations and procedural violations. Nevertheless, the repetition of the ruling without completing the required investigations raised sharp questions among human rights circles and the defense team about the extent of commitment to fair trial guarantees and due legal procedures.
