HDP Women’s Council: We stand by Başak Demirtaş

HDP Women’s Council has released a written statement condemning the sexist social media post of Osman Taşdemir, a lawyer registered to the Istanbul Bar Association, against Başak Demirtaş.

News Center- Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Women’s Council has released a written statement about the sexist attack by a social media user against Başak Demirtaş, the wife of HDP former Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş. “Women are targeted due to the AKP-MHP's misogynistic policies,” the statement said.

‘The attack is against women’s struggle’

In the statement, the social media user is identified as Osman Tasdemir, a lawyer registered to the Istanbul Bar Association. “Başak Demirtaş and many of our comrades were targeted by paid trolls on social media many times before. But none of these attacks made us take a step back from our struggle. The attack on Başak Demirtaş is an attack against women’s struggle,” the statement said.

Call on women’s organizations

“Those who carry out such attacks against our comrades by relying on misogynistic policies and those who remain silent against such attacks should know very well that Başak Demirtaş is not alone,” said the statement. “Everyone should know that we will grow our struggle against such attacks by believing in women’s power and solidarity. The Istanbul Bar Association should immediately launch an investigation against Osman Taşdemir and impose the necessary criminal sanctions on him. We call on all women’s organizations to strengthen the struggle against the attack on Başak Demirtaş. We stand by Başak Demirtaş and Başak Demirtaş is not alone.”
