Hasakah- Turkey continues to attack the NE Syria and Kurdistan Region. While the military operation of the Turkish state continues in the Kurdistan Region, it also carried out attacks in the Tell Tamer and Zirgan towns of NE Syria. NuJINHA spoke to Democratic Self-Government Advisor Cihan Xelil about Turkey’s attacks on the Kurdish regions.

Speaking about the turmoil caused by the current war inside and outside the country, Cihan Xelil noted that Turkey has been carrying out attacks in the region for years and its attacks have reached the highest level by using new methods. “Although some of our regions have been occupied, this war takes place in different ways. The Turkish state's attacks on the territory of Syria have a different method although they are a part of the third world war. We know that the attacks in the past had political and economic aspects, but the attacks that are taking place now are ideological attacks. Although there are economic threats, hegemonic attacks basically target the ideology in the region. The aim of the ongoing Syrian war is to make Syria a stronghold of the occupying forces by dividing the society and weakening it,” she told us.

“The aim is to weaken Russia”

Stating that Russia wants to be the dominant power in Syria and maintain its dominance in the region, Cihan Xelil said that the dictatorial states that want to weaken Russia in the Middle East paved the way for the war between Russia and Ukraine, adding, “The ongoing war in Ukraine is a war of interests of the regime, so they will neither win nor fail. The aim of this war is to weaken Russia and uncover the capacity of its weapons. We think the attacks of the Turkish state in our regions are a part of this war.”

“It aims to occupy strategic regions”

Cihan Xelil drew attention to Turkey's intention to occupy new areas in Kurdistan.

“We know that the whole world now focuses on the Russia-Ukraine war. The Turkish state wants to take advantage of this war since it openly threatened to occupy the region. The Turkish state and Iraqi governments had several meetings. The Turkish state doesn’t want only to occupy the territory of Syria but also the Kurdistan Region. Now, the Turkish state is attacking the Kurdistan Region and Rojava because it aims to occupy strategic regions in Kurdistan before the Treaty of Lausanne expires.”

“We will protect our people against attacks”

Cihan Xelil stated that despite the violent attacks, they, as the Autonomous Administration, are determined to build a democratic life. “We want to benefit from the current policies and political balances in the North and East Syria and serve our society. We have projects and we know very well how to democratize our society, but there will be no solution in Syria if the Syrian regime continues to take a harsh stance in dialogues. With the strength of our people and by organizing our society, we can protect our people from all attacks.”
