Benghazi-Libyan activists think that Libyan women need projects promoting their economic empowerment.

Political activist Shem Boufana believes that Libyan Law aiming at the promotion of national and foreign capital investment is “good and motivating” for women. “However, women face many challenges from patriarchal society.  The media has an important role in motivating women to participate in the labor force. The media should motivate women to participate in the labor force.”

 ‘Society prevents women’s economic empowerment’

Activist Hanan Muhammad thinks that there are no legal restrictions that prevent women’s participation in the labor force. “Women face no legal restrictions when they want to participate in the labor force; however, society prevents women’s economic empowerment. Most of the projects that have been put in practice in Benghazi aim to increase women’s participation in the labor force.”

‘The government does not provide support to women’

Hanaa Al-Shekri, Arabic language teacher in Benghazi, criticizes the government for not providing support to women to realize their projects. “There are projects for women but they are insufficient to promote women’s economic empowerment. The government does not support projects that promote women’s economic empowerment. The government should support such projects.”

‘Libyan women need projects promoting their economic empowerment’

Activist Nisreen Muhammad thinks that Libyan women, who try to realize their projects, suffer from the lack of support and legal protection. “Most of women, who try to realize their project in order to support their families and improve themselves, suffer from the lack of support and legal protection. Authorities should support women's projects. Libyan women need more projects that promote their economic empowerment.”
