In 2017, the Indian film "Mom" came to shed light on this issue through a human story charged with pain and anger, addressing the meaning of justice when institutions fail to do justice to the victim.

The events of the film revolve around Arya, a young woman who is subjected to sexual assault after participating in a party, before being left to face her fate. From that moment, a harsh journey begins that goes beyond the physical and psychological effects of the assault, as she enters into a confrontation with complex legal and social procedures, while trying to prove what she was subjected to and obtain her right.

But the film does not content itself with documenting Arya's suffering; rather, it gradually shifts the center of gravity to Devki, her stepfather's wife, who finds herself before a reality she cannot accept. When the accused escape punishment, Devki refuses to surrender and decides to continue her daughter's battle for justice, whatever the cost.

When Justice Fails in the Courtroom

"Mom" does not present revenge as an end in itself, as much as it raises a more complex question: What happens when official justice fails to do justice to the victim?

Devki begins pursuing the four individuals involved in the assault and decides to confront them with her own methods. Through this journey, the anger of a mother over what happened to her daughter turns into a personal struggle with a system that was unable to protect or do her justice.

At the same time, the film reveals the scale of obstacles that women may face on their path to justice, whether at the legal or social level. Arya's suffering does not end with the end of the assault, but continues in her attempt to prove the truth and confront the consequences of what happened, so that her story becomes a reflection of the suffering of many victims who find themselves before a long and arduous path to restore their rights.

Alongside the issue of violence and justice, the film gives great space to the relationship between Devki and Arya, confirming that motherhood is not always measured by a blood bond, but by the love, protection, and sacrifice it carries.
