Women take to streets in NE Syria to protest male-state violence

Women took to the streets in many cities of North and East Syria to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

News Center - Women held marches and protests in many cities of North and East Syria with the motto, “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom) against all forms of male-state violence and mentality” to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. During the protests and marches, women condemned the Turkish airstrikes on North and East Syria on November 19 and chanted the slogan, “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi”.

Qamishlo

The women of Qamishlo held a march in the Tirbesiyê town of Qamishlo. The women held a banner reading, “Close airspace of North and East Syria” and carried the photographs of revolutionary women, who were targeted and killed in recent attacks. The march started in front of the building of the Kongra Star and ended in front of the building of the Council of Martyrs' Families.

After the march, a statement was read by Nûredîn Şakir, member of the Council of Martyrs’ Families. “Our enemies must know that the women's resistance and struggle has spread to the world from here. Women lit the fire of the revolution. The Revolution in Rojava is a women’s revolution,” the statement said. 

Hasakah

Women gathered in the Til Hacer town of Hasakah Canton to hold a march as part of the campaign launched by the Kongra Start to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. During the march, women chanted slogans against the Turkish attacks.

The march ended after the women chanted the slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi”.

Shahba

Women gathered for a march in Shahba to protest all forms of violence against women. During the march, women held photographs of Jina Mahsa Amini, the fighters of YPJ and women, who lost their lives while fighting for freedom. The women also chanted many slogans such as “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi”, “The killing of women is the killing of societies” and “The YPJ is women’s defense units”.

Kobanê

Thousands of women gathered at Martyr Egîd Square in Kobanê to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Then, they held a march to protest all forms of violence against women and the Turkish attacks. The women chanted the slogan “Jin, jiyan, azadî” while holding the photographs of Jina Mahsa Amini and those who lost their lives in the Helincê Massacre.

Til Tamir

Taking to the streets to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the women of Til Tamir protested all forms of violence against women and the Turkish attacks on North and East Syria. The protest ended after a press statement was issued by the Kongra Star.
