Violence against women rises in Kurdistan Region
Violence against women has risen in the Kurdistan Region. In June, women became victims of femicide and gender-based violence while the authorities did not take any measures to protect women.
News Center- The number of women victims of femicide in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has increased. Although the regional government has banned press outlets from reporting femicide and violence against women, some press outlets keep reporting these cases.
According to the data compiled by NuJINHA from the news reported in the local, national and online press, the crimes committed against women in the Kurdistan Region in June are as follows:
· On June 1, the dead body of a woman was found in Sulaymaniyah.
· On June 18, a woman reported police that a man threatened her to publish her private photos and videos. Launching an investigation into the incident, police detained the man. The perpetrator namely Y.G.H. confessed to having threatened the woman.
· On June 25, a 35-year-old man from outside of the Kurdistan Region raped two women employees in Sulaymaniyah. According to local sources, the man requested money from women and threatened the women if they did not pay. The man was arrested after the women filed a criminal complaint against the man.
· On June 4, a female student at the Soran University died suspiciously after falling from the fourth floor of a building at the campus.
· On June 19, a man killed his wife Evin Ramazan and injured his sister-in-law in Erbil. Then, he killed himself. Serious injured 16-year-old Delvin Ramazan was taken to a hospital. According to local sources, Delvin Ramazan lost one of her legs.
