Unemployment rate increases in Kurdistan Region: Young people feel hopeless

The unemployment rate in the Kurdistan Region has been increasing. Young people say they have no hope for the future.

Sulaymaniyah- Political instability in the Kurdistan Region and the support given by the government to the invasion attacks of the Turkish state have been negatively affecting the region. Young people are the most affected by the deepening economic crisis caused by war policies and corruption. In the region, where the unemployment and poverty rate has been increasing, young people feel hopeless.

Roz Baxtiyar is one of these young people. Complaining that university graduates cannot find a job, she said, “Young people should not expect anything from anyone. They should build hope in themselves; they should create a source of living for themselves. The private sector exploits young people; young people have to work overtime although they are paid low. Young people should raise their voices against this situation.”

‘The government is responsible for the current situation of young people’

Sümeye Cemal, originally from Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan or Iranian Kurdistan) said, “Young people in Eastern Kurdistan and Southern Kurdistan suffer from the same situation. Most young people cannot find a job after graduating from university. The government is responsible for the current situation of young people. Young people spend their time on social media platforms.”

‘Young people think their diploma is useless’

Haje Şiwan pointed out that young people in the Kurdistan Region have been going through a difficult period and said, “Young people have no hope for the future because they cannot find a job. Young people cannot find a job after graduating from university. They think their diploma is useless. Most young people do not want to go to university because they think they will not find a job after graduating from university.”
