Those who lost their lives in Sayfo Genocide commemorated

The Syriac Unity Party commemorated those who lost their lives in the Sayfo Genocide. During the commemoration, the importance of the unity of the peoples against the attacks was highlighted.

Qamishlo- On June 15, Sayfo Genocide Remembrance Day, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) held a commemoration on the occasion of the 107th anniversary of the Sayfo Genocide which took place during WWI under the leadership of the Young Turks in the Ottoman Empire. In 1915, thousands of Syriac people were killed, thousands of them were forced to leave their homeland.

The citizens attending the commemoration lit candles for those who lost their lives in the Sayfo Genocide and then went to the Mor Gabriel Church.

“We will put the Democratic Nation project into effect”

The Syriac Union Party Co-chair Nazira Goreya made a short speech during the commemoration. In her speech, she said that many states have recognized the genocide and that they will keep struggling until Turkey is punished. Indicating that they work to enlighten the future of the people under the umbrella of the Autonomous Administration, she said that they will put the Democratic Nation project into effect.

“The unity of the peoples will prevent other genocides from being committed”

Democratic Union Party (PYD) Council member Şadiya Umer also made a speech during the commemoration. Underlining that the history repeats itself, Şadiya Umer said that Turkey continues to attack civilians. “The aim of the Turkish state is to kill our people and settle other people in our homeland. Its aim is to change the demographic structure of the region. Only the unity and will of the peoples can prevent other genocides from being committed,” she said in her speech.

The commemoration ended after theatre performances and film screening.
