Sit-in of Şenyaşar family enters its 539th day
On the 539th day of the Şenyaşar family’s sit-in protest, journalists were prevented from covering the protest by police. However, police had to withdraw after the people reacted to them.
Riha - The sit-in protest held in front of the Urfa Courthouse by Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband and two sons were murdered in the attack carried out by the relatives and bodyguards of AKP Urfa MP İbrahim Halil Yıldız in the Suruç district of Urfa province on June 14, 2018, and her son Ferit Şenyaşar continues on its 539th day.
In the morning, Emine Şenyaşar and her son Ferit Şenyaşar came in front of the courthouse from their home in Suruç and began to hold their protest in the shade at the entrance of the courthouse, where the police have been preventing them from holding their sit-in protest since August 8. Police tried to prevent journalists from covering the protest. The journalists were told, “Taking photos at the entrance of the courthouse is forbidden”. The police threatened the journalists to commence “legal proceedings” against them.
“The killers walk freely”
In addition to the prevention of journalists, many riot police were sent in front of the courthouse and the Şenyaşar family was surrounded by the police. “You must have taken these precautions when my family members were killed. Three members of my family were killed. The records of security cameras of the hospital were stolen. The killers walk freely,” said Emine Şenyaşar reacting to the police blockade. The police blockade ended after the people around the courthouse reacted to them. The Şenyaşar family continues to hold their sit-in protest at the entrance of the courthouse.
