Journalist Dicle Müftüoğlu: We will not keep silent
“As the students of Apê Musa, we will not keep silent despite all the obstacles and arrests. Long live the free press!” said the letter sent by Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association Co-chair Dicle Müftüoğlu from Sincan prison.
News Center- Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association Co-chair Dicle Müftüoğlu, who was detained as part of an investigation launched in Ankara and sent to prison on May 3, the World Press Freedom Day, has sent a letter from Sincan prison.
Telling how she was detained and taken to Ankara in her letter, Dicle Müftüoğlu wrote, “Just the night before, we demanded the freedom of journalists at the Diyarbakır Courthouse. The operations launched in Diyarbakır and Ankara were the operations for the elections. The aim was to silence the opposition, the Kurds and to intimidate other segments. Despite their efforts to silence us, we have no intention of keeping silent and being afraid.”
‘I call to grow the struggle’
Dicle Müftüoğlu has been working as a journalist for about 15 years. She has been involved in the activities of the Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association since November 2019 to grow the struggle for freedom of speech and the press.
Her letter is as follows:
“As the co-chair of the association, I have been involved in both the activities for reporting and the actions of the association and I have been involved in this struggle since the first day. I was arrested in the crackdown targeting journalists, politicians, lawyers, artists, and others. The crackdown on us shows how justified our struggle is. Seven Kurdish journalists were arrested in a week and the elections were held in such an environment.
I do not even need to say how anti-democratic and unlawful this is. I call on everyone to grow the struggle not only against our arrest, but also to ensure freedom of speech and of the press. As the students of Apê Musa, we will not keep silent despite all the obstacles and arrests. Long live the free press!
