Death-row Iranian women awarded honorary Italian citizenship
The Italian city of Fabriano grants honorary citizenship to three Iranian death-row activists—Bakhshan Azizi, Sharifeh Mohammadi, and Verisheh Moradi—in recognition of their fight for women’s rights and social justice.

News Center – The move by Fabriano aims to increase international pressure to halt executions and encourage Iranian authorities to reconsider the sentences.
Marta Ricciotti, a member of Fabriano’s city council, announced on social media on Friday, August 29, that the city had unanimously decided to grant honorary citizenship to the three Iranian activists. “The city council unanimously approved awarding honorary citizenship to Bakhshan Azizi, Varisha Moradi, and Sharifeh Mohammadi, three Iranian activists sentenced to death for peacefully defending women’s and workers’ rights,” she said.
Ricciotti explained that the proposal was strongly backed by Fabriano’s Equal Opportunities Committee, which urged all council members to support it. She emphasized that granting honorary citizenship is not merely symbolic, but a way to amplify the voices of those fighting for freedom and human dignity.
“The aim of this decision is to increase international pressure to halt executions and encourage Iranian authorities to review these sentences,” Ricciotti added. “Expressing one’s opinion is not only a right but a powerful tool of resistance and solidarity. Silence, on the other hand, constitutes a form of complicity.”
