Women hopeful for elections to be held in Algeria

The number of women participating in elections of Algeria has increased since the Algerian constitutional referendum was held on 1 November 2020. The number of female candidates registered to the Independent Election Commission is approximately 1,500. In 1995, the percentage of female MPs in the parliament were 6.7. In 2020, the percentage increased to 25, 8; the rate of women participating in politics across the country was 19.1 percent.

Algeria- The number of female candidates for parliamentary election was initially announced as 2490 but his number was reduced to 1500 on the grounds that some of the candidates did not meet the criteria. Parliamentary elections will be held in Algeria on 12 June 2021 to elect all 407 members of the People's National Assembly. 24.416 candidates will run for the elections. Women in Algeria welcome the increase in women's representation in the parliamentary elections as a democratic success.

We spoke to Nefisa Lehresh, former MP and women's rights activist about the elections to be held in Algeria. “The increase in the number of seats for women represents a positive atmosphere that can defend women, protect women's rights and their achievement in legal areas,” she said.

Fatma El Zahraa is an independent candidate for upcoming elections in the country. “Independent National Electoral Officers worked to implement the women’s quota system and the 2020 constitutional reforms during that process. These reforms support and encourage the participation of women, men and young people in the political area.”

Women candidates subjected to online violence

Fatma El Zahraa criticized the online violence on women candidates, “After 18-day election campaign, there is general acceptance by both men and women. But women were subjected to online violence during their election campaign.”
