Ankara- Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Şırnak MP Nuran İmir submitted a parliamentary question about the increasing domestic violence during the Covid-19 pandemic to be answered by Family and Social Services Minister Derya Yanık.

Nuran İmir stated in the parliamentary question that Turkey goes back every year in the ranking of gender equality statistics in the world, “Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul convention on March 21, 2021, by a man’s decree while physical violence against women increased by 80 percent, psychological violence by 93 percent, and those seeking shelter by 78 percent during the pandemic compared to the previous year. After the withdrawal from the convention, 28 women were killed in April and 16 women were killed in March.”

Nuran İmir asked the following questions in the parliamentary question;

“* Why is there a difference between the data of your Ministry and women’s organizations?

*How many women were killed due to the effects of the pandemic? How many of them were killed by men? What kinds of measures your ministry has taken to prevent violence against women during the pandemic? 

*How many women demanded to stay in women’s shelters during the pandemic? How many of them were placed?

*Your ministry said that violence against women is at the tolerable level during the pandemic period, what is this level?

*44 women were killed in April and March since the announcement of the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention. Have you investigated the effects of the withdrawal decision on femicides in these two months?”
