Şırnex – In the last month, two women and three girls were killed by men in Şırnak. While the women of Şırnak react to the increasing femicide cases, an indictment has been prepared in the murder trial of Mihriban Şengil, who was shot to death by her ex-husband Metin Şengil in Şırnak’s Uludere district in April. According to the indictment, three pieces of buckshot were detected in Mihriban’s body, life imprisonment is demanded for Metin Şengil.

Metin Şengil will be tried for two different crimes

In the indictment prepared by the Şırnak Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it is stated that Metin Şengil was arrested on 24 April after killing Mihriban Şengil on 21 April. The prosecutor demands Metin Şengil be tried for “deliberately killing his wife,” and “deliberately injuring” Mihriban’s daughter Tuana. The statements of the accused and witnesses and autopsy reports are also included in the indictment.

The statements of witnesses deny Metin Şengil’s statement

According to the indictment, Metin Şengil hid the rifle in his guitar bag and fired as soon as he got out of the taxi. After he had fired three-four shots, he fled and threw his rifle into the stream. In his statement, Metin Şengil claims that he went to see Mihriban Şengil after she texted him and the rifle fired accidentally and that he did not want to kill her. However, the statements of witnesses deny Metin Şengil’s statement. In his statement, the taxi driver said that Metin Şengil began to fire as soon as he got out of the taxi.

He faces life imprisonment

Five shells were detected in the scene, according to the crime scene investigation report. At least three pieces of buckshot were detected in Mihriban’s body, the autopsy report said. In the indictment, the prosecutor demands life imprisonment for Metin Şengil. The first hearing of the murder trial will be held on December 7 by the Şırnak 3rd High Criminal Court.

“The killer must receive the heaviest penalty”

We interviewed Mihriban’s sister Taybet Üren about the murder trial. She call on women and women’s organizations to attend the hearing and said, “My sister had been subjected to torture for years. She had been battered, attacked by a knife. She had returned to her family house many times; however, she had been sent back to her husband’s house each time. In the end, she was killed in front of me. I demand justice, the killer must receive the heaviest penalty. We call for solidarity from all women. Women’s organizations and associations should support us on the day when the hearing will be held.”
