Hearing in Cansu Geyik’s murder trial postponed

The second hearing of the murder trial against Metin Aydoğdu, who killed his wife Cansu Geyik after she filed a divorce case, was held today. The next hearing will be held on July 2, 2023.

News Center- On May 22, 2022, Cansu Geyik, 32, was killed by her husband Metin Aydoğdu in Izmir after she filed a divorce case against him. The second hearing of the murder trial against Metin Aydoğdu was held by the Izmir 16th High Criminal Court today.

Metin Aydoğdu has stood trial on charges of “intentionally killing” Cansu Geyik. The lawyer of the Association of First Women and Children” (Önce Kadınlar ve Çocuklar Derneği), the lawyer of the Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Services and the family members of Cansu Gedik attended the hearing.

Before the hearing, the members of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform (KCDP) and the Karabağ Women’s Council, a group combating violence against women, released a press statement in front of the courthouse.

 ‘If Law No. 6284 had been implemented, Cansu would be alive today’

Funda Özdemir, member of the Karabağ Women’s Council, made a speech, saying, “If Law No. 6284 had been implemented, Cansu would be alive today. However, those who decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention now, unfortunately, talk about the abolishment of Law No. 6284. We will continue to struggle everywhere until justice is delivered for our sisters, who became victims of femicide like Cansu.”

‘She was subjected to systematic violence’

At the hearing, Cansu’s two aunts, uncle and cousin were heard as witnesses. Witnesses stated that Cansu was subjected to systematic violence by Metin Aydoğdu and that she could not go out because she was afraid of being beaten again. They also said that Cansu was killed because she was determined to get a divorce.

 Next hearing will be held on July 2

After a break, the court decided the continuance of detention of the perpetrator Metin Aydoğdu pending the trial and postponed the hearing to July 2.
