Kobanê – The Economy Committee of the Kongra Star has put many projects into practice in Kobanê Canton of North and East Syria to promote women’s economic empowerment. In an interview with NuJINHA, Hêvîn Mustefa, member of the committee, gave information about the projects. “After the revolution that took place on July 19, 2012, women took their stolen rights back and began to take part in all facets of life,” she said.

‘Economic independence is very important for women’

Indicating that women keep struggling against traditions and customs that feed the patriarchal mindset, Hêvîn Mustefa said, “Economic independence is very important for women. Thousands of years ago, women were powerful in the economy; however, the role of women in the economy has been marginalized by the patriarchal mindset and the capitalist system.”

‘We have put many projects into practice’

The Economic Committee aims to promote women’s economic empowerment by developing projects in the Euphrates Region. “We have put more projects into practice compared to last year. Since the beginning of 2023, we have opened sewing workshops, bakeries and beauty and hair salons.”

‘More than 150 women have participated in the labor force’

The Economic Committee has made great efforts to put agriculture projects into practice next year. “We have provided employment opportunities to women. More than 150 women have participated in the labor force thanks to the projects of the committee,” said Hêvîn Mustefa.

Hêza Şêx Bozan, another member of the committee, told us that they want women to be economically independent. “Our aim is to support women and provide employment opportunities to them.”

‘I earn a living without depending on anyone’

Zêynep Welîd is one of the women working in the beauty and hair salon opened by the Economic Committee. She began to work in the salon about eight months ago. Before working in the salon, she took a training course and successfully completed the course. She said, “In the coming days, we will receive our certificates. Now, there are 13 women attending the beauty course and four women attending the sewing course. Now, I earn a living without depending on anyone.”
