News Center _ In Sudan, the repercussions of the humanitarian crisis are widening with escalating violence and the deterioration of basic services, driving more residents to displacement and deepening shortages of food and shelter, amid a funding gap hindering the response to urgent needs.

The United Nations warned yesterday, Monday, July 20, of the continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan amid escalating violence and the expanding circle of displacement particularly in the states of Kordofan and Darfur. The organization’s spokesperson affirmed that humanitarian needs are increasing day by day due to the persistence of fighting.

In North Kordofan, the World Food Programme alerted to a rapid deterioration in the city of El Obeid as a result of the influx of displaced persons into it , noting that approximately 400,000 people in the Shikan, Bara, and areas are facing emergency levely of acute food insecurity.

In Central Darfur State, a recent assessment by United Nations partners indicated that food represents the most urgent need for approximately 236,000 displaced persons in five locations within the West Jebel Marra locality. In South Darfur, approximately 4,000 families have been displaced due to violence between local communities, and are in urgent need of shelter and basic essentials.

The UN spokesperson renewed the call for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, emphasizing the necessity of providing rapid and flexible funding to enable humanitarian partners to meet the escalating needs across various parts of Sudan, noting that the humanitarian response plan has only been funded by 39% so far, with only $1.1 billion collected out of the required $2.9 billion.
