Armenian woman in NE Syria: We should not allow history to repeat itself

“We should not allow history to repeat itself,” said Losnak Kavoriyan, Co-chair of the Armenian Youth Movement in North and East Syria, condemning genocidal policies against the Alawite community in Syria’s coastal regions.

Hasakah-Since March 6, 2025, the armed groups supported by the interim government led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have committed genocidal attacks on the Alawite community in Syria’s coastal regions.

In an interview with NuJINHA, Losnak Kavoriyan, Co-chair of the Armenian Youth Movement in North and East Syria, condemned the genocidal attacks on the Alawites, stressing that the attacks reminded her of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

“In 1915, the Ottoman Empire killed thousands of Armenian children, women and young people,” she said. “Today, the same genocidal attacks are carried out by their grandchildren. The nation-state system builds itself by committing massacres and shedding blood. The 1915 Armenian Genocide, the Massacre in Shengal Massacre, and the massacres committed by ISIS against the Syriac people in 2015 are some of the attacks carried by this system. ISIS and the Turkish state have carried attacks against the people of North and East Syria while the armed groups supported by HTS have killed the Alawites.”

‘Political Islam formed by the government in Damascus poses a threat to Syria’

What is going on in Syria is not a renewal process, indicated Losnak Kavoriyan. “Massacres have been taking place in Syria while a new Syria is expected to be built. This shows that the new government does not implement a democratic system. There is no difference between the Baathist regime and the new government. Political Islam formed by the government in Damascus poses a threat to Syria. We call on the international human rights organizations to take an urgent action in order to stop the massacres.”

In her speech, Losnak Kavoriyan condemned the international silence against the ongoing massacres. “People living in Syria’s coastal regions have been killed and left without food. The international community should break their silence and protect the people in the coastal regions. As young women, we must be in solidarity with each other to stop the massacres. We must prevent new massacres from being committed again. We should not allow history to repeat itself.”

‘They want to destroy the culture of the Armenians’

Losnak Kavoriyan also criticized the constitutional declaration approved by the interim government in Syria. “The constitutional declaration does not protect the rights of Armenian women. They (the government) want to destroy the culture of Armenians once again. We do not recognize this constitutional declaration and will keep struggling against it.”
