The family of women’s rights activist and Noble Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi stated, through the foundation bearing her name, that she was transferred twice to a hospital emergency department after sustaining injuries during her arrest on December 12. The arrest followed her participation in a memorial ceremony for lawyer Khosrow Ali Kordi in the city of Mashhad, who was found dead in his office last week.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation, run by her family, said that Mohammadi contacted her family on Sunday evening and confirmed that her health condition had deteriorated as a result of severe beatings she endured during her arrest.
During the call, Mohammadi explained that she had been accused of “cooperating with Israel” and had received death threats from Iranian authorities. She therefore requested her legal team to file an official complaint against the security agency detaining her and against the violent manner in which the arrest was carried out.
Mohammadi had been released from Evin Prison in Tehran in December last year after the suspension of her sentence for health-related treatment reasons. To date, Iranian authorities have not issued any official statement regarding her current situation or the circumstances of her latest arrest.
