“We did our part. The International Coalition, UN and international community have great responsibilities,” said SDF General Command member Newroz Ehmed, speaking about the second phase of the “Humanitarian and Security Operation” in al-Hol camp.

Hasakah-The second phase of the “Humanitarian and Security Operation” launched by the General Command of Internal Security Forces in North and East Syria in al-Hol camp against ISIS sleeper cells on August 25 has ended on its 24th day. Newroz Ehmed, a member of the General Command of Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) spoke about the results of the phase and noted that the International Coalition, the UN and the international community have great responsibilities in the camp.

“We wanted to build a new system”

Speaking about why the second phase of the operation was launched in the camp, Newroz Ehmed said, “The attacks on al-Sina and Ghwayran prisons at the beginning of 2022 had a connection with al-Hol camp. ISIS planned to free their families in the camp. For this reason, we launched the second phase of the operation to take measures. Our aim in launching the phase was to build a new system in the camp. However, the attacks of Turkey in the region and the attacks of ISIS on Ghwayran prison delayed the operation.”

“Active ISIS female members have been arrested”

Indicating that they faced many difficulties during the operation, Newroz Ehmed said that they will be able to achieve better results with the cooperation of all their forces and the International Coalition. “Our two comrades sacrificed their lives to ensure safety in the camp. Many military materials, tunnels and hiding places used by ISIS members were neutralized. In addition, investigations were launched against those who carried out inhuman practices in the camp. Some of the arrested people are women because women are used in the worst way. Women have been used to establish connection with other ISIS members inside and outside of the camp. Children and women have been trained according to the radical ideology of ISIS. I think it is the most dangerous crime.”

“Two Yazidi women were rescued”

During the second phase of the operation, two Yazidi women were rescued from ISIS. “There are still Yazidi women who are held captive by ISIS in the camp. Our main aim is to rescue these women. We still make efforts to rescue them. Those who tortured these two Yazidi women will be punished. We get good results from this operation but these results are insufficient. We should end the presence of ISIS in the camp.”

“Common struggle is a must”

Emphasizing that they, as fighters, will fulfill their responsibilities to the end, Newroz Ehmed said that the mentality should change in order to get successful results. “ISIS and radical groups use the people and organize themselves in the camp. A common struggle is a must to prevent them from using people and organizing themselves in the camp. People from 60 countries live in the camp and women and children live under very bad conditions. This danger threatens not only us but also the whole world.”

“A new ISIS is being created”

According to the documents seized in the camp, ISIS was created by the sovereigns, Newroz Ehmed said, “ISIS was created by the international powers for a purpose. Our message about the operation is that; we get good results but these are insufficient, we need military support. According to the seized documents, ISIS has a connection with Turkey and Iraq. Most of those who fled the camp go to Iraq and Turkey. They use mobile phones in the camp to contact other ISIS members. The documents and findings we obtained prove this.”

“Actions should be taken”

Mentioning the role of the International Coalition, Newroz Ehmed said that the UN, the international community and organizations should realize the danger in al-Hol camp and produce a solution against this danger.

“Humanitarian aid organizations should be careful”

Emphasizing that humanitarian aid organizations should be careful against ISIS members in the camp, Newroz Ehmed said, “The humanitarian aid organizations should not support ISIS families to organize themselves in the camp. We know they try to help people in the camp but they should remember that al-Hol camp is not a normal camp. They should be careful. They should be in touch with the camp management and security forces.”

“An international tribunal is needed”

Underlining that an international tribunal is needed to solve the complicated problem in the camp, Newroz Ehmed said, “There are many ISIS members, who committed crimes in al-Hol camp and are prosecuted in their country. We need a common effort to prosecute these ISIS members. Many countries do not show this sensitivity and ignore the crimes committed by ISIS members. Such problems cause a complicated situation. We cannot afford to solve these problems; an international tribunal is needed to solve these problems as soon as possible.”
