“95 women were killed in 2021,” claims Derya Yanık
Turkey’s Family and Social Services Minister Derya Yanık claimed that only 95 women were killed in 2021.
News Center- Turkey’s Family and Social Services Minister Derya Yanık informed the committee in the parliament to investigate violence against women. The minister claimed that 85 women, who didn’t get any restraining order, and 10 women, who got a restraining order, were killed in 2021. But According to the report prepared by We Will Stop Femicide Platform, 154 women were killed in 2021, in five months.
“Regardless of income, age, or education, women are subjected to physical and sexual violence by their husband or ex-husbands or intimate partners. Approximately 1 in 3 women over the age of 15 are subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their life. Approximately 1 in 5 women over the age of 15 were subjected to physical or sexual violence in the last 12 months. Women aged between 15 and 29 have the greatest risk,” Derya Yanık said.
Talking about the number of femicides in the country, Derya Yanık reported, “172 women were killed in 2009, 165 in 2010, 155 in 2011, 151 in 2012, 175 in 2013, 282 in 2014. The number of women, who were killed despite a restraining order, is 45. In 2021, 85 women, who didn’t get any restraining order, and 10 women, who got a restraining order, were killed.”
