Women in Gaza have to give money to their husbands to get a divorce. The women, who have no money, have to stay with their husbands. Lawyer Hanadi Salah says women have to prove they have been subjected to ill-treatment to get a divorce.

Gaza- Divorces happen all around the world; however, the procedures of divorces are different in Gaza. Women in Gaza have to give money to their husbands to persuade them to get a divorce.

36-year-old M.H. asked for a divorce from her husband, 10 years older than her, because of his bad behavior against her. She applied to a court in Gaza but she was told, “You can only get a divorce when both parties agree to divorce.”  She had to give her husband a large amount of money to get a divorce. When she went to court, she saw that there were many women like her.

29-year-old N.A. cannot get a divorce because she doesn’t have money to give her husband. Her husband asked her to give up all her rights and give him money if she wants to get a divorce. Now, she is waiting for the laws to change in order to get a divorce.

Women have to prove they have been subjected to ill-treatment

Lawyer Hanadi Salah gave information about the procedures of divorces in Gaza. “The courts in Gaza demand the couples agree to divorce. If they don’t agree, women have to prove they have been subjected to ill-treatment. If women prove that, they get a divorce.”
