News Center- The final hearing of the trial against journalist Nurcan Yalçın on charges of being affiliated with a terrorist organization and spreading terrorist propaganda was held today by the Diyarbakır 9^th High Criminal Court. Nurcan Yalçın didn’t attend the hearing while her lawyer Resul Temur did. The prosecution demanded Nurcan Yalçın be sentenced to prison on charges of being affiliated with a terrorist organization and spreading terrorist propaganda.

Nurcan Yalçın's lawyer Resul Temur rejected all accusations against his client. “An investigation was launched against my client for being a member of Rosa Women’s Association. My client has the right to be a member of an association but her membership is cited as a crime. My client is a journalist. She has worked for a production company since the investigation was launched. She has been preparing video programs for channels. For this reason, my client visits many places and does interviews for video programs. She hasn't committed any crimes. I demand her acquittal. ” said her lawyer.

She has been sentenced to prison

The court has sentenced Nurcan Yalçın to two years and one-month prison sentence on the charges of “knowingly and willingly helping a terrorist organization” and to one year, six months, and 22 days on the charges of “spreading terrorist propaganda”. The court decided to postpone the announcement of the verdict.

CFWIJ calls for immediate annulment of the decision 

The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) posted a tweet regarding the prison sentence against journalist Nurcan Yalçın. “#Turkey: #Diyarbakır court sentenced @nurcan_yalc to two years & one month besides 18 months & 22 days in prison after convicting her on bogus terror-related charges. #CFWIJ condemns this decision & calls for its immediate annulment. #JournalismIsNotACrime #EndLegalHarassment,” read the tweet.
