Arbitrary arrests of women in Federal Kurdistan Region

In the Federal Kurdistan Region, women have been facing arbitrary arrests to be silenced.

LAVE KURDE

Sulaymaniyah – In the Federal Kurdistan Region, many women have faced arbitrary arrests and detentions. Some women have reported that they were held in detention for more than 15 days or sometimes six months. Some women have been detained just for their posts on their social media accounts.

Lawyer Peyman Ezedîn told JINHA that the rights of women are violated by arbitrary arrests and detentions. She provides legal support to the victims of arbitrary arrests and detentions.

Women have the right to a fair trial

Peyman Ezedîn told us women’s right to a fair trial is violated.

“If a person has not been arrested by court order, the arrest is an illegal arrest. If the court finds the person innocent, the person is released. I have never been against a general amnesty. Unless a general amnesty is issued, particularly in Southern Kurdistan, the problems caused by arbitrary arrests and detentions will not be resolved. If a fair trial takes place, these problems will be resolved. Women have the right to a fair trial. Holding women in detention for days or months is a right violation against women.”
