ÖZGÜR KAYA
İzmir- Women, who are the most important part of the society, have suffered more during the pandemic. The lockdown measures taken during the pandemic have affected women’s working life and home life for months. Nowadays, women have tried to create alternative job opportunities at home because of the economic crisis. Selin is one of these women. Let’s learn how Selin overcomes this difficult period.
Her story with dream catchers
A dreamcatcher or dream catcher is a decorative item believed to protect from evil and nightmares by some Native American tribes. It is a handmade willow hoop, on which is woven a net or web. The dream catcher is one of the mystical objects that have taken place in our lives lately. These handmade decorative items maintain their place as a preferred decoration item for their mysticism and elegant appearance. The circle made of willow wood is said to symbolize life. Some Native Americans believe that it keeps bad thoughts away and brings good thoughts. 39-year-old Selin is the mother of two. She started making dream catchers as a hobby but now she makes a living by making them. Selin began to make dream catchers during the pandemic.
Making dream catchers develop spontaneously
Selin bought a dream catcher as a birthday present for her friend. Then she decided to make it herself. Selin tells her story with dream catchers as follows;
“What did I aim for? Actually, in the beginning, I thought about how to spend time at home during the pandemic. I felt I should do something. Colors and shapes always impress me. And I began to make dream catchers. When I understand how making dream catchers make a contribution to our economy, I make them with pleasure.
Selin talked about her story with dream catchers. She didn’t know anything about the dream catchers when she started making them. And she began to research. She told us some Native American tribes believe that the dream catchers protect them from evil and nightmares. While Selin makes dream catchers, she reflects her emotions in the motifs and colors of the dream catchers. She tries to create models because she feels bad when she uses only a model for making the dream catchers. Selin makes them spontaneously.
She feels relieved both economically and psychologically
Selin feels relieved both economically and psychologically by making dream catchers. Selin called on women and said;
“They should find a hobby. First, they should think about how they will feel good not how they earn money. Surely, the economy is important. A woman who feels good can make a big contribution a lot to her family, children, spouse, and home. And they shouldn’t think they cannot do something. They should try. I didn’t take any courses to make dream catchers. I tried to improve myself by watching online videos. We shouldn’t say we cannot do but we should say we can do everything to the end; we can be successful. Women can do everything if they want.”
