NAGHAM KARAJEH

Gaza- The victims of the dirty wars waged by sovereigns are usually women and children. 34-year-old Asmaa Abu Tair, who lost one of her legs in an Israeli attack, set up a sewing workshop despite all the social pressure.

“I have a prosthetic leg”

Mother of three, Asmaa Abu Tair told us what happened after being injured in an Israeli attack. “When my leg was amputated, my health deteriorated. I went to Jordan for treatment and received treatment there for a year. I began to use a prosthetic leg. I received physiotherapy for three years. After my treatment, I started a small-scale project to make a living. In 2019, I started making pastries and desserts. Although I was good at making them, I had to give up because I could not stand for a long time.

She took a sewing course for six months

Despite her poor health condition, Asmaa Abu Tair had to keep working due to the deteriorating economic situation in the Gaza Strip. In 2021, the Erada Training and Development Center announced a sewing and fashion design course. “I took the course for six months and I became the best student of the course. The center funded my small entrepreneurial project named ‘Butterfly’. Therefore, I rented a small shop next to my house and bought the necessary equipment.”

“I need an electric wheelchair”

Asmaa Abu Tair noted that although she has achieved success, she often has to struggle with difficulties. “When I use a sewing machine, I have a lot of trouble because of my prosthetic leg. I need an electric wheelchair to move better. Disabled women and girls can also work. Many people suggested to my husband to remarry because I have only one leg. I hope to expand my business, gain new skills and achieve greater success.”
