Sanandaj- Sanandaj, which is known as the “capital of Newroz”, is also famous for its handicrafts produced by women. The women of Sanandaj who produce colorful carpets, woven local dresses, hats, scarves, and everyday products, have exhibited their talents. We visited the last handicraft exhibition held by women in the city.

The exhibition attracts attention with the cultural motifs on the products as well as its colorful atmosphere. Zahra Menbari, Director of the Handicraft Multipurpose Cooperative and one of the organizers of the exhibition, told us that they have held such exhibitions for years and they have held exhibitions collectively for two years. “Most of the women participating in the exhibition are the heads of their families, the women who earn a living for their families and shoulder all the burden of their families. We want our exhibition to be known and all these artistic women to earn a living.”

While walking around, we saw an exhibition booth displaying wooden products. We met Bahareh Dehghan, who displayed her wooden products at the exhibition. She told us she participated in the exhibition with her husband Nasir Mohamad Moradi. She also told us that she has made all wooden products but her husband supports her.

Kimia and Shima Salahian are two sisters participating in the exhibition to display their handicrafts. “My sister Shima Salahian and I have made handicrafts for several years and we have a certificate. We also want to participate in other exhibitions.”
