Kobanî – Earth is one of the most abundant, basic building materials used in building houses and roofs for nearly ten thousand years. In addition to materials such as soil, straw, sand, animal hair, the materials of the earth roof vary according to the region.

They are durable

Earth houses, which offer a healthy life as well as an authentic view, are strong, durable, and fire-resistant. “They can stand forever as long as people live there,” said Eysa İbrahim, who builds earth roofs in Kobanî.

Eysa İbrahim lives in the Kortikê village of Kobanî. She earns a living by building earth roofs. She built her earth house. “I built my house using earth. I built it using earth because it is healthy and economic. Building houses using earth is also our culture. We should preserve our culture. We learned how to build earth houses from our parents and grandparents. We use soil, straw, sand, and animal hair to build our houses. We draw figures on the walls. It keeps you warm in winter and cools in summer,” she told us.

“ISIS destroyed our houses”

Stating that the roofs of houses especially in rural areas are earth roofs, Eysa İbrahim said, “ISIS destroyed our earth houses in 2014. We rebuild our houses now. These houses can stand forever as long as people live there.”
