Yemen – Human rights activists and social media users have launched a social media campaign against femicides in Yemen after the brutal murder of 23-year-old Shorouk Ahmed Manea in the city Sana’a of Yemen under the name of “honor”. On September 26, she was brutally murdered by her brothers and a cousin under the name of “honor”. She was buried in the Dhamar city, south of the capital.

“It is a serious crime”

Human Rights Observatory Foundation president Anis El-Shareq spoke to NuJINHA about the campaign and the murder of Shorouk Ahmed Manea, “We suffer from unjust and oppressive tribal customs and the empowered armed people. The murder of Shorouk Ahmed Manea is a serious crime. We see such crimes in different areas. Murders under the name of 'honor' are not considered as a crime by the laws.”

“The laws in Yemen should be changed”

Anis El-Shareq demanded the murderers be prosecuted, “They committed a crime against a woman; however, the laws protect them. The laws in Yemen should be changed.”

“The perpetrators should receive the heaviest punishment”

Ali Al-Bakhiti, the Yemeni politician and journalist, also reacted to the murder of Shorouk Ahmed Manea and said, “The perpetrators should receive the heaviest punishment.”
