Civilians live in air raid shelters to protect themselves

People of the Bab El-Xer village have been building air raid shelters to protect themselves from Turkey’s airstrikes. “We will not leave our village. Either a free life or honorable death,” Nura Şexmus Ehmed, one of the villagers, says.

Hesekê- Turkey has carried our operations on Syria since June 2016. One of the areas under the Turkish attacks is Til Temir and the settlements around it. People living in this area have been building air raid shelters to protect themselves from Turkey’s airstrikes.

The Bab El-Xêr village of Til Temir has been building shelters since summer. Nura Şexmus Ehmed, one of the villagers, has built air raid shelters to protect her children from airstrikes. “For three years, we have been under the attacks of Turkey and Turkish-backed factions. Most of the artilleries targeting our village and the villages of Eboş are fired from Baragahîn Ineg El-Hewa. Civilians are targeted in attacks. The houses of civilians were plundered. A few days ago, our village and its surroundings were bombed. Civilians fled to the desert and spent the night under airstrikes. Sometimes we don’t have time to flee from airstrikes and have to stay at home. During the airstrikes, we cannot go to Til Temir to buy vegetables and fruits so we have planted vegetables in our garden. Since the invaders came close to the village, we have faced water and electricity shortage. Authorities came to our village three times to solve the electricity problem. But we have lived without electricity for a year because the invaders target electric networks,” Nura Şexmus Ehmed told JINHA.

More people build air raid shelters

Nura Şexmus Ehmed told us that the villagers built air raid shelters to protect themselves from airstrikes and fired artilleries. “People living in our neighboring villages have begun to build shelters. Russia and the USA haven’t done anything to stop attacks. They are the so-called guarantor countries but they don’t monitor what civilians face. We don’t believe them. We believe in our fighters. Our fighters protect us.”

“We don’t leave our village”

Stating that the aim of the operations is to force the people to displace, Nura Şexmus Ehmed said, “But we aren’t afraid of their artilleries and fighter jets and we will not leave our village.  Either a free life or honorable death.”
