SUHAM AKMAN

Qamishlo- Women, who were the architects of the agricultural revolution, also known as the first revolution in the world, started a revolution in Rojava after a thousand years. After being left without an identity by the Baathist regime for dozens of years, the women of Rojava cleared their region from ISIS and became a role model for the whole world. The Jineology Academy, which has carried out research on Rojava society and women in Rojava-NE Syria, has published a book entitled, “Historical foundations and future of the women's revolution". The academy held an activity in Qamishlo and Kobanî to present the book. The book has been published in Kurdish and Arabic.

Published by Jineology Academy Publications, the book is written by Şervin Nûdem and redacted by Luqman Guldivê. The 606-page book contains research and analysis about the history of Rojava.

It focuses on all cultures in the region through history

“History is hidden in today” says the first sentence of the book, which gives information about people living in the region such as Arab, Kurdish, Assyrian, Armenian, Turkmen, Chechen, Circassian people and their cultures and traditions. The book gives information about not only the history of civilizations but also their religious such as Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Yazidiism, Alevism, and Shiism.

Women in history

The book thoroughly researches the 12-14 thousand-year-old history of women in Rojava and NE Syria. It gives information about the role of women in politics, family, free co-life and co-presidency system, health, ecology, economy, education, science, demography after the women’s revolution.

We spoke to Şervin Nudem, a member of the Jineology Academy, about the book. She told us how and when they started writing the book.

“We began to work on the book three years ago. We began to work on it to understand how and when the foundations of the women's revolution started. We wanted to research the effects of the Neolithic era on women and society. In the book, we point out what kind of changes the Kurdistan Revolution created for women and the roles of women in the Revolution in Rojava. We interviewed women about their expectations for the future. We conducted research on all the peoples of the Cizre Region, listened to the stories of old women in the region to write the book. Most of these women are not alive now.”

Women write their own history

Şervin Nudem told us that 2000 copies of the book have been published since the book is a source book. She also told us the book will be translated into many languages soon.

“We will publish more copies if it is needed. The book was prepared with the efforts of many people, particularly the efforts of the women of Rojava. Men write history from their own perspective. For this reason, we need such books. Women write their own history. This book is an important work for us,” Şervin Nudem said.

They had many meetings

Speaking about the preparation phase of the book, Şervin Nudem said:

“We try to shed light on women's future dreams. We had more than 300 meetings in NE Syria before writing the book. There are stories and history in the book. One book, of course, is not enough to tell the revolution in Rojava. But we hope it will set up an example for other books.  We should write more books.”
