Yemeni journalist Hala Badawi released from prison

Journalist Hala Badawi, who was arrested in 2021 over her reports and recent social media posts in Yemen, has been released

Yemen- Yemeni journalist Hala Badawi was arrested on December 30, 2021 over her reports and recent social media posts. After months of injustice and arbitrary detention, the journalist has been released by the Criminal Court of First Instance in the Yemeni Governorate of Hadhramaut. She is acquitted of all charges.

On 19 April 2022, the Specialized Criminal Court in Hadhramaut Governorate decided to release Badawi after she had spent more than 100 days in prison. However, the hearing continued until December 7.

Speaking about the unjust and arbitrary detention of Hala Badawi, lawyer and a human rights defender Afraa Al-Hariri said, “The journalist faced many charges, including spying and communicating with foreign agencies.”

Human rights defenders held a protest in Yemen to support Hala Badawi and react to her arbitrary detention and the smear campaign launched against her.
