Amed – Women from the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) will initiate their program of International Women’s Day, March 8, in the Dargeçit district of Mardin province, the hometown of Garibe Gezer, who died suspiciously in prison, with the motto, “Time is the time for women's freedom”. The movement will organize demonstrations in five cities on March 8 with the slogan, “Women will change this order”.

“This year's celebrations will be stronger and more organized”

Hasret Alp, an activist of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) and member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Women’s Council, told us that they will initiate their program in Mardin on February 25 and in Izmir on February 28. “We will gather in two cities to draw attention to the murders of Deniz Poyraz and Garibe Gezer and to make those responsible not go unpunished. As women who knit a strong women's struggle against all attacks, we will take to the streets this year as we do every year. The reason why we will initiate our program in Dargeçit and İzmir this year is to draw attention to the Kurdish women who were murdered there. We, as women, will meet on a common ground against the increasing gender-based violence and femicide in Kurdistan and Turkey. We will expand the network of struggle.”

“We will frustrate attacks by getting organized”

Noting that this year's celebrations will be stronger and more organized than previous years, Hasret Alp said that they aim to eliminate the attacks on women. “We aim to unite all women, working women, female politicians, or students in every part of life. We will stand up against this fascist order. One of our aims is to frustrate all attacks against women by getting organized. Our first aim is to reveal a strong women’s stance against these attacks.”

“Women will change this order”

Stating that they will take to the streets with the motto, “Time is the time for women's freedom”, Hasret Alp pointed out that the current order cannot give anything to women and society. “Women will change this order. We are women struggling to build a democratic, free and equal order. We will organize our activities and events for International Women’s Day to build it.”
