Hasakah- The Turkish state has been carrying out attacks on Zirgan, town of the Hasakah Canton in North and East Syria, for three years. Turkey has eight military bases in the town and its surrounding villages. Many civilians have been killed in the Turkish attacks until now.

“We protect the people and their values”

Gulistan Mihemed Ferhan is one of the Women’s Internal Security Forces in the town. Stating that the women fighters have a responsibility to protect the people and their values, she said, “Today, we are at checkpoints to ensure the security of civilians and our people. If we do not protect the checkpoints, it can cause many turmoil and terrorists may enter the town and attack our defense areas. We check the IDs and vehicles of civilians to ensure their security. We are always ready to protect the town.”

“Our unity is the guarantee of success”

Indicating that the people welcome the vehicle controls, Glistan Mihemed Ferhan said, “They become very happy when they see us doing our duty because the region is not safe. Many attacks are carried out every day and we do our best to ensure the security of civilians. The region is in great danger, but our people keep resisting.  The Women’s Internal Security forces members will always support civilians. Our unity is the guarantee of our success.”

40-year-old Henan Xelef El-Salim is a mother of three and member of the Women’s Internal Security Forces. Underlining that women fighters have been waging a great resistance at the checkpoints in the town of Zirgan, she said, “After fulfilling my responsibilities at the checkpoints, I go home to fulfill my responsibilities there. I have many responsibilities and I try to fulfill all of them. The burden on women’s shoulders is heavier than men’s. We always respect our people. Protecting our region is not only our responsibility but also the responsibility of every individual living in this region.”
