Turkey: 9 journalists sent to prison
Nine journalists, who were detained on October 25 as part of an investigation based in Ankara, have been sent to prison for their reports and social media posts.
News Center- On October 25, 10 journalists were detained in six cities as part of an investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Yesterday, the journalists, Mesopotamia Agency (MA) editor-in-chief Diren Yurtsever, MA reporters Berivan Altan, Deniz Nazlım, Selman Güzelyüz, Hakan Yalçın, Ceylan Şahinli, Emrullah Acar and Jinnews reporters Habibe Eren and Öznur Değer and journalist Mehmet Günhan were sent to courthouse.
After five hours, MA editor-in-chief Diren Yurtsever, MA reporters Berivan Altan, Deniz Nazlım, Selman Güzelyüz, Hakan Yalçın, Ceylan Şahinli, Emrullah Acar and Jinnews reporters Habibe Eren and Öznur Değer were sent to a court to be sent to prison.
Journalist Mehmet Günhan was released under judicial control and banned from travelling abroad.
Nine journalists sent to prison
A court ruled the pre-trial detention of nine journalists on accusations of “being members of a (terrorist) organization”.
The relatives of the journalists and their colleagues waiting outside the courts protested the decision by chanting, “The free press cannot be silenced.”
