‘The people of Southern Kurdistan demand the reopening of Semalka Border Crossing’
The KDP has closed the Semalka Border Crossing, preventing aid supplies to be delivered to the displaced people in northeastern Syria. “The people of Southern Kurdistan demand the reopening of the border crossing,” said Ronak Macid.
DİDAR ŞAHLA
Sulaymaniyah- Since November 27, 2024, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have carried out attacks on North and East Syria, displacing thousands. The people of the Kurdistan Region (of Iraq) launched a campaign to collect aid supplies and deliver them to the displaced people in northeastern Syria; however, the aid supplies have not been delivered to the displaced people because the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has closed the Semalka Border Crossing.
NuJINHA interviewed Ronak Macid, a women’s rights activist in Sulaymaniyah, about the campaign and challenges faced by them.
‘All Middle Eastern countries will be affected by the World War III’
Ronak Macid defined the ongoing conflict, clashes and wars in the Middle East as World War III. “The occupying Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have launched an attack on North and East Syria. The displaced people of Afrin taking shelter in Shahba have been displaced for the second time due to the attacks on Shahba. The Turkish state and the enemies of the Kurdish people have been attacking North and East Syria since 2014. Following the fall of Assad's regime, ISIS re-emerged and the Turkish state started using armed groups to attack the Kurds in northeastern Syria. They aim to redesign the Middle East. All Middle Eastern countries will be affected by World War III.”
Speaking about the attacks targeting women, she said, “Women are always targeted because they have the power to change their society.”
‘The people demand the reopening of the border crossing’
Ronak Macid called for unity in four parts of Kurdistan against the ongoing attacks on North and East Syria. “Kurds living in four parts of Kurdistan and abroad must unite; they should organize marches and protests, raise their voices and collect aid supplies for the displaced people in northeastern Syria. Aid supplies collected in the Kurdistan Region as part of the campaign cannot be delivered to the displaced people because the KDP has closed the Semalka Border Crossing. The people of Southern Kurdistan demand the reopening of the border crossing to deliver aid supplies to the displaced people in northeastern Syria.”
