Southern Kurdistan: 2 women killed in June

Two women were killed and one woman died under suspicious circumstances in Southern Kurdistan (Iraqi Kurdistan) in June, according to a report released by Rojnews.

On June 2, 2025, a high school student identified as Sara Fereydun died under suspicious circumstances in the Bineslawa neighborhood of Hewlêr (Erbil), Rojnews said.

A woman namely N.A.E. (26) was killed by her husband in the Zakho region of Duhok on June 12. On June 22, a high school student identified as Aşna Xesrew was killed in the Soran region of Hewlêr (Erbil) by unidentified persons.

Violence against female lawyers

Rojnews also reported that security forces detained four opposition lawyers identified as Şehla Ali, Munire Abdullah, Nur Ferîq and Dilsoz Zengene in Sulaymaniyah on June 24 without any arrest warrant. The lawyers were reportedly subjected to physical violence in detention by security forces.

In the first five months of 2025, 14 women were killed, two women were injured and 10 others died under suspicious circumstances in Southern Kurdistan, according to Rojnews.
