Makhmour- The citizens living in the Makhmour refugee camp for years have been protesting the attempt of the installation of a wire fence around the camp since December 27. The camp is the home of more than ten thousand Kurdish refugees who fled from Turkey in the 1990s after their villages had been burned down. The Iraqi central government wants to install wire fences around the camp since December 27. On January 1, the people living in the camp began to hold a watch in the camp to protest the installation of wire fences around the camp. “We resisted and we will keep resisting,” women living in the camp said.

Sitî Yeman, a refugee woman living in the camp, reacted to the installation of the wire fences around the camp and said, “We have lived in the Iraqi territory for 27 years and we have lived in this camp for 23 years. Until now, no one has attempted to install wire fences around the camp. They (the Iraqi central government) want to isolate us from the world. We will never accept the camp to be surrounded with wire fences.”

They will continue to protest

“I want to call on all patriots of Kurdistan. If we don’t unite, we will be subjected to attacks from everywhere. We will continue to raise our voice and protest,” another refugee woman Hewa Kar said.

“Those who want to install wire fence have a dirty mentality”

Another refugee woman Hacer Tok demands the Iraqi central government to stop attempting the wire fences installation around the camp. “Until now, I have protected ourselves from all attacks and we will continue to protect ourselves. We didn’t bow to the pressure of Turkey or the KDP for years. We will not bow to them and keep protesting the wire fences installation,” she told us.

The watch of the refugees continues in the camp.
