“Nagihan led women with her pen and resistance”

“We will not leave Nagihan’s pen on the ground. We will organize our anger, knowledge, experiences and hope,” said Figen Aras, stating that the attack that killed Nagihan Akarsel, is an attack on free women’s identity.

Amed – Nagihan Akarsel, journalist, academic, Jineolojî Academy member and Jineolojî Journal Editorial Board member, was killed as a result of an armed attack in Sulaymaniyah two days ago (October 4). While the Sulaymaniyah Asayish forces have claimed that they have arrested the perpetrators, Kurdish people have taken to the streets all around the world to protest the killing of Nagihan Akarsel.

“The assassination was carried out against the free women’s identity”

Figen Aras, a columnist of the Jineolojî Journal, said that the assassination carried out against Nagihan Akarsel aims to intimidate free women’s identity. “The male-dominant system was afraid of Nagihan Akarsel, who put everything she thought and questioned into practice,” Figen Aras said, “The ruling system is afraid of organized women.” Stating that Nagihan Akarsel was well known for her articles published by the Jineolojî Journal and many newspapers, Figen Aras emphasized that they, as organized women being involved in the studies of Jineology, will not leave Nagihan’s pen on the ground.

“She waved great struggles in practice”

“Nagihan was a writer and researcher leading women for enlightenment. We know her for her articles published by the Jineolojî Journal. Throughout her life, she waved great struggles in practice to liberate women from slavery and to build a free life. The male-dominant system is afraid of such women, who have an ideology, think, write, question and put what they think in practice. Therefore, the killing of Nagihan is linked to the killing of resisting women,” Figen Aras said.

“She had a life philosophy based on women’s freedom”

“The governments are afraid of the organized women's struggle and they are aware that this struggle will bring them to an end,” Figen Aras said, “For this reason, we say that the 21st century is the century of women. Nagihan always wrote this in her articles. She had a life philosophy based on women’s freedom.”

“This attack is an attack against the values of the Kurdish women's movement”

Describing the assassination against Nagihan Akarsel as “An attack against the values and achievements of the Kurdish women's movement,” Figen Aras said that the attack also had a message of fear against the global women's struggle. “Cowards die many times before their deaths,” Figen Aras said that all governments will end sooner or later. “The system is afraid of the women, who rise up against men, families and fathers and the educated women. And we believe that this process, which took place with the voice, spirit and resistance of Nagihan, also has a great impact on the studies of Jineology. Because, jineology is actually an ideology of revealing the history, values, thoughts and knowledge of women. Therefore, we believe that this social science approach of Jineology will be used as a method in the solution of social issues.”

“We will organize our anger and hope”

Figen Aras promises that they will not leave Nagihan’s pen on the ground. “This struggle will never end by killing women, on the contrary, we get angry when women are killed. We will organize our anger, knowledge, experiences, and hope. There is no other way for us. We have been forced to live in slavery for thousands of years but now we reject this slavery. Jina Amini was killed because her hair was visible. Nagihan was killed because she didn’t accept the cage in her brain and broke that cage. Women should use their self-defense against attacks. If women unite, they can protect themselves against attacks.”
