More women prefer studying medicine
Thanks to women’s efforts and struggle for increasing the number of women in education, more young women prefer studying medicine at universities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Sulaymaniyah- Education is important for all societies. According to some data in the Kurdistan Region, the number of young women studying medicine at some universities is very high. According to the data, the percent of women studying at the faculty of medicine of the Sulaimani Polytechnic University is 65.2, the percent of women studying at the faculty of medicine of the Qaiwan International University is 43. The data also show that the percent of women studying pharmacy is 60, the women studying dentistry is 36.2 and the women studying healthcare is 48.
‘Having experiences is important’
Renû Abdulwehîd, a lecturer at the Pharmacy Department of the Qaiwan International University, thinks having experiences is important to serve people.
Speaking about the percentage of women at the pharmacy department, she said, “According to the data, the number of women studying medicine at universities is very high. The number of women in medicine increases thanks to the efforts and struggle of young women because they have been changing the sexist discourses that say women and girls do not need to go to school. Young women study hard to get very high scores at the university entrance exam. They prefer studying medicine because they want to help people.” Speaking about the percent of women studying pharmacy at the Qaiwan International University, Renû Abdulwehîd reported that the percent of women studying pharmacy is now 60.
‘Parents determine the fate of their daughters’
‘Parents choose which department that their daughters will study when their daughters are very young. Parents determine the fate of their daughters. This shows that the number of young women studying medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and healthcare will increase in the future.”
