Shahba- In North and East Syria, women organize activities and events to mark the International Women’s Day with the motto, “Towards a women's revolution with the slogan of Jin,Jiyan, Azadî”. Afrin-Shahba Kongra Star has held seminars in villages and towns of Shahba as part of its activities for the International Women’s Day since February 28.

Women attending the seminars learn the history of women’s struggle. In an interview with NuJINHA, Leyla Xalid, coordinating member of the Kongra Star in Afrin’s Şêrewa district, pointed out that women have been fighting the patriarchal mentality for centuries.

“Women illuminate the darkness of life by struggle. They play an important role in all spheres of life by participating in art, politics, diplomacy and the military. Women make efforts to build a democratic and free society. Thanks to the philosophy of Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan, we have gotten to know ourselves, become stronger and stood against the patriarchal mentality that aims to destroy the role of women in society,” Leyla Xalid told us.

 ‘Airstrikes continue despite the earthquakes’

Speaking about the situation of the people living in Afrin’s Şêrewa district, Leyla Xalid said, “Despite the devastating earthquakes, the Turkish state continues to launch airstrikes on the region while the siege imposed by the Syrian government on the region continues. The ongoing airstrikes and siege cause the people to suffer more. Despite everything, we will keep resisting and we will struggle until all women are freed from slavery. We will fight until all occupied areas are liberated.”

 Call on women to unite

Medîhe Şêx Xelîl, a member of the Education Committee of the Kongra Star in Şerawa, says the International Women’s Day is the spirit of women's resistance and struggle. Speaking about the role of women in North and East Syria, she said, “They waged a great struggle for the revolution because women were targeted by the capitalist system. We will keep struggling for the freedom of all women in North and East Syria and around the world and for the physical freedom of leader Öcalan.”
