Makhmour-  Kurdish journalist Deniz Fırat was killed on August 8, 2014 in the attacks of ISIS on the Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) starting on August 7, 2014. Today, on the 9th anniversary of her death, a commemoration ceremony was held in the camp. The photographs of many Kurdish journalists such as Musa Anter, Gurbeteli Ersöz and Deniz Fırat were exhibited at the photograph exhibition held in the camp.

 After a minute’s silence, Jiyan Piran made the opening speech. “Today is the 9th anniversary of the martyrdom of our pioneer Deniz Fırat. We bow respectfully to Deniz Fırat for her efforts and resistance. We will keep following in the footsteps of our pioneers, Deniz Fırat, Rizgar Adanmış, Evin Buldan and Gurbeteli Ersöz,” Jiyan Piran said.

 Cuma Yıldıztan, brother of Deniz Fırat, also made a speech at the commemoration ceremony. He said, “Today is the 9th anniversary of the martyrdom of Deniz Fırat. The people of Kurdistan know how Deniz Fırat fought to report the truth. In 2014, she resisted to the end in order to document and report the barbarism of ISIS supported by the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) and the Turkish state. She fought the enemy sometimes with her camera, sometimes with her weapon and she never bowed to the enemy.”
