IWD in earthquake zone: We will rebuild cities

Women coming together in the earthquake zone to be in solidarity with the women affected by the earthquakes said, “We will rebuild cities.”

News Center- Two devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey, Kurdistan and Syria caused extensive damage in many cities. Hatay and Semsûr (Turkish: Adıyaman) are two of these cities. On the International Women’s Day, women from many cities in Kurdistan and Turkey came together in Hatay and Semsûr to be in solidarity with the women affected by the earthquakes.

Hatay

Hatay Disaster Women are Stronger Together Platform organized two marches in the Defne district of Hatay with the participation of many women. The marchers carried banners reading, “Jin, jiyan, azadî (English: Women, Life, Freedom)”.

Women participating in two marches came together at the Democracy Square in the district. After one minute’s silence for those who lost their lives in the earthquakes, the marchers chanted, “We will rebuild this place.”

 Fatma Ardal read a statement on behalf of all women participating in the marches. “We know who is responsible for what we experienced. We have promised each other to rebuild this city together,” the statement said.

Semsûr

A solidarity activity for women affected by the earthquakes was organized in the tent city located in Semsûr’s Narlıkuyu district today by the Free Women’s Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Jinên Azad-TJA), the Feminist Solidarity Group for Disaster, the Confederation of Public Employees' Trade Unions (KESK) Women’s Council, the Democratic Alevi Associations (DAD) Women’s Council. The women unfurled a banner reading, “Women’s Solidarity Keeps Alive” on a tent. The women said they would continue to be in solidarity with the earthquake survivors.
