Israeli strikes escalate in Gaza, UN warns of famine

Israeli forces escalated airstrikes on Gaza, killing dozens and triggering mass displacement, as the United Nations warned that over half a million people face famine amid a deepening humanitarian collapse.

News Center - Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed dozens and destroyed residential areas Tuesday, as the UN warned over half a million people face catastrophic hunger amid relentless bombardment and mass displacement.

Intensified Israeli strikes hit Gaza City on Tuesday, September 16, killing and injuring dozens. Entire residential blocks were leveled without warning, while attacks on the al-Sabra neighborhood left four Palestinians dead, according to media reports.

The escalation coincides with the launch of a ground offensive in Gaza, one of the territory’s largest cities. More than 350,000 residents have fled south in recent days despite UN warnings that no areas are safe in the war, now nearing its second year.

Displaced families face dire conditions with scarce food and aid, as bombardments continue.

‘Catastrophic hunger’

The UN’s humanitarian chief warned that the number of people in Gaza facing catastrophic hunger could exceed 640,000 this month. He stressed that famine can still be prevented if a ceasefire is reached, aid convoys are allowed in, safe routes opened, and trade permitted.
