News Center- Iran has officially suspended the implementation of the new compulsory veiling law that imposed severe penalties on women and girls, who defy compulsory veiling, reported Islamic Republic News Agency.
According to the news agency, on Saturday, the Supreme National Security Council of Iran requested the implementation of the new compulsory law to be halted so that an amended bill can be submitted to the parliament by the government.
The “Law on Protecting the Family through the Promotion of the Culture of Chastity and Hijab”, containing 74 articles, was set to come into force on December 13, 2024.
The law imposes the death penalty, flogging, prison terms and other severe penalties against women and girls, who defy compulsory veiling. The law was drafted in May 2023, after the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” uprising that sparked in the country following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022.
