‘International aid organizations should fulfill their responsibilities for displaced people’

Hasakah- The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions occupied Afrin in 2018 and Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ayn) and Girê Spî (Tell Abyad) in 2019, displacing thousands. Since then, the displaced people have lived in camps or schools in different cities of North and East Syria. Despite the ongoing siege imposed on the region by the Syrian government forces and Turkish attacks, Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has been mobilized to meet the needs of the displaced people.

In an interview with NuJINHA, Îtab Hesen, member of the Office for Humanitarian Service in Til Temir, talked about the worsening situation of the displaced people living in Til Temir (Tell Tamer). Emphasizing that the AANES does its best to meet the needs of the displaced people, she said:

“Many displaced people of Serêkanîyê came to Zirgan and Til Temir towns when the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions occupied the city in October 2019. Many displaced people were settled in rural areas, camps and schools. Most of them are women and children. Since they had no source of income, we held vocational courses for them. We developed many projects for women in 2024. We applied for grants to realize these projects and now we are waiting for a response from humanitarian aid organizations.”

North and East Syria has agricultural lands and the office developed agricultural projects for women. “Since the received support does not provide long-term solutions, we developed agricultural projects for women so that they can start their small-scale agricultural business. Our other project is to open sewing courses for women. Women, who will attend the courses, will teach other women how to sew. More projects must be developed for displaced women. The AANES has been mobilized to meet the needs of the displaced people; however, it has limited opportunities due to the ongoing siege and Turkish attacks. The international aid organizations should fulfill their responsibilities for displaced people.”
