Iman Al-Halaf: Family law is an opportunity for women
Iman Al-Halaf from the Zenubya Women's Community Education Committee says that women, who lived under the control of ISIS in Raqqa, still suffer from trauma, “Some are still afraid of going out. But now, they have a family law.”

Raqqa- The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) enacted the Family Law on November 10, 2022 to guarantee justice and equality. Meetings, seminars and workshops have been held across North and East Syria to give information about the Family Law. In an interview with NuJINHA, Iman Al-Halaf, member of the Zenubya Women's Community Education Committee, talked about the law.
‘The Family Law is one of the important gains of the revolution’
Speaking about the gains achieved by women following the revolution in Rojava, she said, “The Family Law is one of the important gains of the revolution. We have held meetings, seminars and workshops in cities, towns, villages and neighborhoods to give information about the law.”
The Zenubya Women's Community Education Committee develops educational programs to ensure gender equality in North and East Syria.
“Our educational programs aim to include women in all facets of life, ensuring gender equality in society. Women have been restricted by the patriarchal mindset, traditions and traditions for thousands of years. Many issues such as child marriage and polygamy are the result of the patriarchal mindset. Femicide increases day by day due to the patriarchal mindset. The Family Law must be immediately implemented to eliminate child marriage, polygamy, femicide and violence against women.”
‘Women’s rights have been taken away’
Women in the Middle East are still subjected to discrimination, persecution and exclusion due to gender stereotypes, Iman Al-Halaf said. “Women are expected to rear children and manage the daily requirements of the household. All the rights of women have been taken away. After the Syrian crisis, women faced more restrictions.”
‘Family Law is an opportunity for women’
Iman Al-Halaf also talked about the situation of women in Raqqa under the control of ISIS. “Women, who lived under the control of ISIS in Raqqa, still suffer from trauma. Some are still afraid of going out. But now, they have a family law. The Family Law is an opportunity for women to break their chains. Women can file a complaint when their rights are violated. We will keep making efforts to give information about the law. We will ensure gender equality to have a free and ethical society.”
